Frequently Asked Questions

At Her Journey Counseling, I provide compassionate therapy for teen girls, adult women, and perinatal clients in New Braunfels, Texas, surrounding areas, and online across the state. Below are answers to common questions about therapy, what to expect, and how to get started.

Getting Started with Therapy

Q: How do I know if therapy is right for me?

A: Therapy can help if you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, lonely, struggling with self-esteem, or navigating a life transition. It’s also a safe space to explore emotions, process grief, or improve relationships. If you’re unsure, scheduling a consultation is a great first step to see if we’re a good fit.

Q: What can I expect in my first session?

A: In your first session, we’ll get to know each other, discuss your goals, and explore what brought you to therapy. You’ll have space to share openly, and together we’ll create a plan tailored to your needs.

Q: How often will we meet, and how long does therapy last?

A: Most clients meet weekly or biweekly, depending on their goals. Therapy length varies—some clients see improvements in a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over months.

Q: What is Walk and Talk Therapy?

A: Walk and Talk therapy sessions are held outdoors and combine talk therapy with movement.  I offer walk and talk sessions at local public parks in New Braunfels.  Walk and talk sessions are a seasonal offering-not offered in extreme heat or cold!

Q:Do you offer free parking?

A: Yes!  You can park in front of or beside the office building.  Please note, the driveway is one way and must be entered from Seguin Avenue.

Q:Where is your office located?

A: My office is located inside Livery Station Professional building at 468 S. Seguin Avenue, Suite 200 New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Q:If I have questions about Licensing and Complaints, where do I go?

A: https://bhec.texas.gov/contact-us/ https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/consumer-protection

Q:Am I able to request my Personal Health Records?

A: Yes, you can request your records or a summary of your records by emailing your therapist.  Records requests do incur a fee.  Please allow 30 days for the therapist to gather your records.  This time may vary depending on how in depth your request is.

Fees, Insurance, and Policies

Q: What are your session fees?A: 15 minute phone consultation: Free

Initial Intake Session: $180

60 minute session (in person or telehealth): $160

Walk and Talk Session: $175

No additional fees for interactive elements such as Animal Assisted Therapy, Art, Sand tray, etc.

Clients can pay using any major credit card, debit card, HSA/FSA card or cash.

You will pay for counseling services the same way you pay your attorney, hair stylist, mechanic and personal trainer!  I partner with Mentaya to help clients use their Out-of-Network insurance benefits to have costs reimbursed.  Use this link to check to see if you qualify for Out-Of-Network benefits:  Benefits Checker

Q: Do you accept insurance?A: I do not accept insurance.  I care deeply about my clients and believe that the absence of insurance provides better confidentiality to my clients, as well as more freedom to provide the care my clients need without input, or coverage denial, from an insurance company.  I work with Mentaya, a platform that helps clients get money back on out-of-network therapy sessions. To see if you qualify for reimbursement, you can use this link: Benefits Checker

If you qualify, Mentaya will file claims and handle the insurance paperwork to make sure you get reimbursed. They charge a 5% fee per claim and have helped people get thousands of dollars back per year.

Note: Mentaya's goal is to save you time and money. It's completely optional, and as your therapist I do not benefit in any way from your participation.

Q: What is a superbill?A: A superbill is a detailed invoice outlining the services a client receives.  Clients may choose to submit their superbill directly to their insurance to receive reimbursement.  Reimbursement rates vary among insurance plans and policies. Clients can choose to submit superbills on their own to insurance for out-of-network reimbursement.  I work with Mentaya to make the process much easier for my clients!

Q: What is a Good Faith Estimate?A: The Good Faith Estimate is a form provided by the therapist that outlines self pay and uninsured individual’s expected charges for scheduled or requested services.  This form is required to be provided by all medical providers as part of the No Surprise Act of 2022, in an attempt to help clients understand the cost of the care they require or request.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?A: Cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Late cancellations or no-shows are subject to being charged the full fee of the session that is scheduled.
